Debunking Misconceptions About Colorism and "Da Legacy of Slavery" as it Relates to Gender Relations Amongst "Black" Americans

This post might hit a little home for some, but it needs to be addressed. For years we’ve been told the story about how “no one’s more unprotected than the ‘Black’ [American] woman” and how she is pretty much synonymous with inherent and perpetual victimhood in American society. Well, I hate to have to burst everyone’s bubble, but this narrative needs to be put in line amongst the rest of the bullshit myths that we’ve learned in school and through mainstream media (“indentured sevitude myth, Civil War being fought over slavery myth, etc.).

This “damsel-in-distress” paradigm in “Black” AmeRican society can basically be boiled down to three main points (myths):

1) That “Black” AmeRican men somehow owe “Black” AmeRican women something/their undying loyalty.

2)That “Black” AmeRican women need to be “saved”.....from themselves, that is.

3)That being a victim is somehow a position/the ultimate position of power and that they somehow have more of a right to be angry/indulge in victimology than everyone else.

If you have been following my earlier posts, you would have been made aware of the fact that the vast majority of so-called “Black” Americans are indeed Original Americans; in particular, the maternal lineage of “Black” Americans is overwhelmingly and undeniably Amerindian. In my very first post here on Google+, I briefly touched on the fact that the “mass rape” claim was specifically exaggerated to a large degree. Well now, with more information being made available, one can be safely assured that the “mass rape” claim is indeed the “mass rape” myth.

Do not mistake what I’m saying; I am not denying certain circumstances in which American females were victimized (such as lynchings, actual rapes, victims of violence, etc.), but rather debunking the artificially traumatic and misleading narrative that somehow all/most American females in chattel slavery were “viciously raped”. If you research the laws back then, you would have been made fully aware of the “anti-miscegenation” laws that were being passed heavily in those days, especially in the Deep South/Southeast. As well as anti-miscegenation laws being passed back then, if you were to look into the history of places such as Louisiana, you also would have been made aware of something called placage: a system of common law marriages in which mainly French and Spanish men married and/or courted full-blooded/enslaved/free “women of color”/”Negro” American females (see: Octoroon balls). This was so prevelaent in some areas that there were even Tignon Laws passed to have these women cover their hair to keep these European men from hitting on them too much. (Question: if all American females in bondage were supposedly subhuman and being rape continually and giving birth to mixed babies, why did the European colonists bother to pass anti-miscegenation laws in the first place?) Also, if you were to read books such as “Sex, Race, and the Negro: Vol. 2”, you’d learn that many of the Ame’Rican females in bondage were having sex with Union soldiers (including orgies) during the end of the fighting of the Civil War. Here’s an example of an excerpt from that book:



“DURING the fourteen years the Northern army was in the South a vast amount of miscegenation took place between the white soldiers and the Negro women so much so that many Southerners contend that "there was no amalgamation until the Northern soldiers came down during the war and remained in garrison during the Reconstruction."*~ What such Southerners really mean is that *the Northerners mixed with the Negro women openly, not taking them into dark alleys and hidden corners. Whenever Union troops marched into any part of the South, the Negroes swarmed out to welcome them. Were they not the liberators that were freeing them from labor that had galled them and their ancestors for centuries? Parton says that so many Negroes came out to receive General Butler and his men in one Louisiana sugar parish that it was like thrusting a walking stick into an ant-hill. Quitting all work they became servants and camp followers of the Union Army. Numbers of Negro women actually flung themselves at the white men. Chestnut says, "The colored women, dressed in their gaudiest array carried bouquets to the Yankees, making the day a jubilee."*~Mrs. Eppes wrote, *"The Negro women sought the white men openly-even young boys were not safe from their solicitation."*~Hannibal Thomas, a Negro writer, who was a Civil War veteran, wrote, *"The consummate degradation" of the Negro woman "was reached during the Civil War. It may have been the outcroppings of gratitude to Federal victors, or reckless abandon to lust but the inciting cause is immaterial so long as the shameful fact is true, that, wherever our armies were quartered in the South, the Negro woman flocked to their camps for infamous riot with the white soldiery. All occupied cities, suburban rendezvous and rural bivouacs bore witness to the mad havoc wrought daily in black womanhood by our citizen soldiery. W e have personal knowledge of many Federal officers of high station, and some of strong prejudices against the race, who openly kept Negro mistresses in their 1Hart, A. MISCEGENATION SINCE THE CIVIL WAR 261 army quarter^."^ Mrs. Avary said that she saw colored women "parading the streets with white soldiers for b e a ~ x . " ~ Mrs. E. T. Andrews, who saw much of the race-mixing between Union soldiers and Negro women in Georgia tells of a Union captain of her acquaintance who went to a Negro ball and "danced with the black wenches." And after doing that, she said, the white Northerners would expect the white ladies of the South "to share their attention with our Negro maids." Among the white men, who dined with the Negroes, she said, was General Wild and Dr. French, army surgeon. She continues, "Last Sunday a Yankee soldier with two black concubines in his arms tried to push Mr. and Mrs. . . . off the sidewalk . . . "They had a nigger barbecue out at our old picnic ground, the cool spring, where they no doubt found themselves in congenial society with their black Dulcineas. . . . "They had two Negro balls while they were here, the white men dancing with the Negro women. One night they held their orgy in Bolton's Range and kept everybody in the square awake with their disgraceful noise. They strutted about the streets on Sunday with Negro wenches on their arms."6 This lady was less shocked by the fact that her "dear old mammy, Sophia," had five children by a wealthy Southerner, who set them free, and sent them North to be educated. Mrs. M. W. Andrews, another Southern white woman, said, "The scenes enacted at that dwelling in connection with the Negro servants are not fit for female pen to dwell upon." "And yet," she adds, "these officers complain they are not invited to sit at the tables of Southern gentlemen." 7 In short, the bars were down. The panic caused by the bursting Northern shells and the privations made many Southerners realize that there were things far more important than their fetish, social equality. The greatest license in sex relations between white and black prevailed. Southern white men who had long been timid about being seen in public with their Negro concubines, no longer hesitated.”

Abstract: “In 1805, a New Orleans newspaper advertisement formally defined a new social institution, the infamous Quadroon Ball, in which prostitution and plaçage–a system of concubinage–converged. These elegant balls, limited to upper-class white men and free “quadroon” women, became interracial rendezvous that provided evening entertainment and the possibility of forming sexual liaisons in exchange for financial “sponsorship.” It is the contention of this thesis such “sponsored” relationships between white men and free women of color in New Orleans enabled these women to use sex as a means of gaining social standing, protection, and money. In addition, although these arrangements reflected a form of sexual exploitation, quadroon women were able to become active agents in their quest for upward social mobility. Until recently, historians have overlooked the lives of Louisiana’s free women of color during the colonial and antebellum eras. My research, therefore, expands historical knowledge about the unique social institution of Quadroon Balls and plaçage relationships in order to give greater breadth to scholarly understandings of quadroon women’s sexual and economic choices. This research formally began in summer 2006, during my participation in the Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) at the Ohio State University. Through this experience, I was able to begin analyzing the institution of Quadroon Balls and I have discovered the immense possibilities of this topic. While there are many directions that this research can take, I have decided to focus my undergraduate research and honors thesis on the history of the balls and quadroon women’s agency in antebellum New Orleans. In order to research these concepts, I have utilized a combination of primary sources and secondary sources written about women of color. In winter 2006, I was awarded an Undergraduate Research Scholarship and, with this money, I visited New Orleans and Baton Rouge to conduct archival research. My most recent trip to New Orleans and Baton Rouge has augmented my understanding of the topic by providing a large quantity of primary source materials, including court cases and other legal documents, as well as affording me an opportunity to experience archival research first hand in the actual historical environment in which the balls took place. Ultimately, I plan to continue my current research as my dissertation topic.”

Also note that after Reconstruction, you had many examples of “Black” Ame’Rican females who would even sleep with Klansmen and other “White” men (the “honkey” term derived from the fact that “White” men would honk their horns to request “Black” prostitutes) and the “Black” man that she was married to would have to raise the child is she got pregnant from the encounter. In fact, the court case that made anti-miscegenation laws illegal involved a “White” man and a “Black” Ame’Rican female (Loving vs. Virginia).

What would motivate many “black” females to sleep with these foreigners (outside of casual mating scenarios)? Pretty much for the same reasons that you have already been told about why many would agree to become mammies, bedwenches/jezebels, and sapphires on behalf of the colonial structure in the first place (just with the knowledge now that most of the women were actually Original Americans and were NOT raped): less work, menial materialism, low self-esteem, hypergamy/the promise of a pampered lifestyle, and above all; ego validation.Then when the reality set in that the majority of them would never even get a sniff at that lifestyle that they envied from Upper-class European females (one, because the elites only care about wealth and controlling everyone, and two, because no one likes or respects a straight-up traitor), that’s when the culture of “The Angry Black Woman” begun to take root.

And by the way, don’t get caught up in that myth that “Black” American men were these perpetually passive people that never fought. Not only were there some 250+ ‘slave’ uprisings in this area of the Western Hemisphere, but these Brothas were also involved in some of the biggest anti-colonial wars and campaigns here (Hatian uprising, Blackhawk War, Yamasee Indian War, and the Gullah/Seminole Wars; the latter being a continuation of the Yamasee Indian War). We can also include the various feats of bravery accomplished by Ame’Rican Brothas in every single war that the United States fought against a rival/foreign power (ex: 369th division in WWI, Buffalo Soldiers in the Spanish-American War, 54th Massachusetts in the Civil War, Tuskeegee Airmen in WWII, etc.).

People make it seem as if Everyday Brothas are the main ones to blame for the ills in the “black” communities (namely the Blue-collar Brothas and the “educated lames”), but in reality all of the entities that continually blame and shame them and scream the most about “saving the community” (White Supremacists, Pro-Black Anglophiles, other bigoted foreigners, reprobate Ame’Rican males and especially females, the federal government, etc.) are the very ones that betrayed and destroyed the communities that we live in.


Many people have said it a hundred different ways, but it bears repeating: as messed as things are here in Central North America, especially in regards to the AmeRican so-called “Black” woman, the harsh (and for many, the painful) reality of it all is that 90% of the negative reputation and serious issues that they face are self-inflicted wounds that AmeRican “Black” men by and large had nothing to do with. We do not descend from authoritarian cultures; so let’s please kill the myth of AmeRican “Black” men “forcing” the women to indulge in these destructive behaviors. It is their gullibility, low self-esteem, hypocrisy, egocentric desires, etc. that are the biggest contributors to the problems that they face. Seeking to scapegoat Everday Brothas will do nothing except make their problems worse (and really, just push away their biggest allies, which the Everyday Brothas that they scapegoat, especially the Blue-collar workers and “educated lames”). Me personally, I only feel sorry for the all of the people negatively affected by their decisions, but not for the women who make them.

P.S. If you are an Ame’Rican female that this doesn’t apply to, then great (no, seriously, great!). Do not ever allow yourselves to be shamed (especially by other women) for striving to be your best selves. Just remember two things:

1) Ultimately, the best thing that you can do you “save” and “uplift” the many, many reprobate “Black” Ame’Rican females in the world is to not be one yourself; avoid them like the plague and/or avoid taking them seriously (Law of Power #10: Infection-Avoid the unhappy and unlucky.).

2) Always remember that a society can rise no higher than the moral position of its women; you cannot adequately grow things in poisonous and corrupt soil, no matter how good the gardener is.
